Identify the material first

There is no single cleaning routine for every luxury handbag. Smooth leather, suede, patent finishes, coated canvas and fabric have different requirements. A pre-owned bag may also have repairs or treatments that affect what is safe to use. Before trying any product, check the material and consult the relevant house or a qualified specialist.

The colour-block Chloé bag pictured here is an illustration, not an instruction to apply one treatment to all its surfaces. When material information is incomplete, ask rather than experiment.

Protect it from the obvious—and the ordinary

Hermès advises protecting leather from water, heat, direct sunlight and extremes of humidity. CHANEL recommends avoiding overfilling and limiting exposure to light and humidity. These precautions are useful reminders, but the house’s instructions for the particular material remain the reference.

Be mindful of cosmetics, oils, ink and fabrics that may transfer colour. Carry pens and liquids in separate pouches. Avoid forcing the bag to hold more than its shape comfortably allows; a closure that has to be pulled into place is a sign to take something out.

If it gets wet, skip the heat

For leather covered by Hermès’ care guidance, water should be gently wiped with a soft cloth. Let the bag dry naturally away from direct heat. Do not reach for a hairdryer, vigorous rubbing or an unfamiliar chemical cleaner.

For stains or uncertain finishes, seek professional advice. CHANEL and Gucci warn that cleaning or protective products can alter appearance. A product sold as a universal leather solution is not proof that it is suitable for your bag.

Store without pressure

Empty the bag before storage and use an appropriate protective pouch. CHANEL advises upright storage and avoiding objects stacked on top. Keep the bag in a suitable dry environment away from prolonged direct light; allow hardware and straps to rest without pressing into delicate surfaces.

Natural changes and patina can develop with use. Care is about reducing avoidable damage, not promising that a pre-owned bag will look new forever. If a repair is needed, retain the details of the work and disclose it if you later sell the bag.
