The Iconic Bag — Provenance

Trained eyes.
No shortcuts.

A beautiful bag deserves more than a believable story. We look past the logo, into the craft — and put our name behind what we find.

Inspected by hand.

01 — The authentication process

The details tell.
We listen.

Every bag is examined in person. Not just photographed. Not waved through because the logo looks right. Our inspection follows the character of the house, the model and the period — because genuine craftsmanship is specific.

01

The story before the stamp.

We begin with the house, the model and its era. Shape, proportions, materials and construction must belong together. Available purchase history and accompanying accessories add context, but a receipt, a dust bag or a convincing seller's story never authenticates a handbag on its own.

02

The maker’s quiet signatures.

Blind stamps, heat marks, typography and engravings are read in context: their position, depth, spacing and finish matter as much as what they say. Where a model carries a serial identifier or date code, we check its consistency with the bag's construction and period. Houses change their systems; there is no universal code that proves authenticity.

03

Leather with a language.

Grain depth, suppleness, finish and the way a bag holds its shape reveal how it was made. We examine the outer material, lining, edge paint and concealed folds, considering the leather or canvas expected for that model. Natural patina is read as part of the bag's history — not confused with a manufacturing shortcut.

04

A stitch is a signature.

We inspect stitch spacing, angle, tension and thread, paying particular attention to corners, handle attachments and interior seams. Saddle stitching, quilting and woven construction each demand a different reading. The standard is the house's workmanship for that model and era, not an arbitrary rule that every luxury bag must look identical.

Study II — Hardware & finish
05

The weight of the details.

Hardware is examined like jewellery: weight, surface finish, engraving and the fit of every moving part. Chains, zips, screws, clasps and turn-locks must make sense as a set. We check their construction and operation against the design, looking for inconsistencies that a polished exterior can disguise.

06

The whole bag. The final word.

No single stamp, stitch or piece of hardware gets the last word. We bring the findings together and assess the bag as a whole, including signs of wear, repair or replaced parts. Condition and authenticity are separate judgements. If the evidence does not support our confidence, the bag does not earn a place on our shelf.

The illustrations are studies of craftsmanship, not authentication certificates. The real work happens with the bag in our hands.

02 — The Iconic Bag Guarantee

Ask about authenticity

Our independent guarantee is separate from your statutory rights and our returns & exchanges policy.

03 — A few straight answers

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Does pre-owned mean less authentic?

No. Age and wear describe condition, not authenticity. A gently worn vintage bag and a never-worn recent piece must both meet our authentication standard. Condition is described separately so you know what you are buying.

Is a serial number or receipt enough?

No. Identifiers and paperwork can be copied, misplaced or inconsistent. They are supporting evidence, not a substitute for examining the bag itself. Not every authentic bag has the same identification system.

Is the Iconic Bag affiliated with the designer houses?

The Iconic Bag is an independent pre-owned boutique. Our inspection and guarantee are our own; they are not a brand-issued certification or an endorsement by the original designer house.

Does the guarantee cover wear or a change of mind?

The lifetime guarantee covers authenticity. It is not a promise that leather, hardware or stitching will never age, and it is separate from ordinary returns and exchanges. Our returns policy explains those arrangements.

What if I have an authenticity concern years later?

Contact the Iconic Bag through Enquiries with your order details, clear photographs and any relevant assessment. We will review the concern with you. If a bag we sold proves not authentic, our promise is a full refund of its purchase price — whether the concern arises tomorrow or years from now.
